Regeneration Farm

Healthy soil is the cornerstone of robust agriculture. At Handy Farms, we embrace its significance with open arms. The intricate web of life within the soil supports all growth.

Our practices prioritize maintaining this vital ecosystem. Through attentive care, we strive to ensure that every seed planted has a strong foundation. Soil health impacts both crop yield and nutrient quality.

Key techniques in our soil management include:

  • Never using any chemicals (we call these the ‘IDES – pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc.) or synthetic chemical fertilizers.
  • Carefully selecting and cultivating a diverse cover crop to enhance diversity and symbiotic relationship between the soil microbes, plants, and animals.
  • Practicing no-till farming methods to ensure the integrity of our fungal mycorrhiza works in the soil.
  • Grazing animals under the trees using planned/rotational grazing methods to maximize the health of the animal and soil.
  • Applying biologically active vegetative compost to enhance biology and available nutrition.
  • Inoculating soil with a diverse array of beneficial microbes through brewing our own compost tea to help restore the rich abundance of soil life that needs to exist to have healthy soils, healthy plants, healthy animals, and healthy people.
  • Farming the land with all the love our little family can give! We love this way of farming and living.

These methods help sustain the rich, fertile ground our crops thrive upon. They’re crucial for capturing carbon and fostering resilience against climate challenges.

The benefits reach beyond plants. Consuming foods grown in nutrient-rich soil supports human health. It bridges the essential connection between what we eat and how we farm. At Handy Farms, the vitality of the soil guides our mission, nourishing both land and community.

Handy Farms is owned and operated by the property’s only residents: the Handy Family. Clayton Handy had a dream to create a fully sustainable farm. He dreamed of having his food products free from pesticides, herbicides, and as nutritionally dense as possible. The result is an agricultural system that preserves the health of the farmer, consumer, and mother nature.

All products at Handy Farms are grown using a regenerative agriculture system. This means the diverse plant and fungal ecology is planned in such a way that the crop’s nutritional needs are met by this underground network. As a result of the dense understory soil organic matter is also building. This improves the soil’s water-holding capacity and pulls carbon from the atmosphere into the soil where it acts as a vital building componenet in plant growth. How is that for reducing carbon footprint?

The dream would be incomplete if it weren’t for the children’s laughter as they play throughout the orchard and dense vegetation beneath. The vision of Handy Farms includes family, nutrition, and Earth. It is truly a labor of love.
